20 years ago, the Lord of the Rings made fantasy relevant to showbiz, and proved that hundreds of millions of fantasy readers were ready to support any fantasy adaptation for the big screen. 

In the decades since, we have seen the rise of first fantasy movie franchises like Harry Potter, and with the dawn of streaming TV, also the rise of fantasy series, whose long-running format allowed for the adaptation of ever more ambitious, grander series that were never thought to be adaptable in the past, like Game of Thrones. 

Of course, with hits there have also been misses, but by and far, every year brings new and more exciting franchises, drawing on classic and cult favourites with millions of fans around the world. Here are some of the latest fantasy streaming TV shows and series to be looking forward to in the upcoming year 2022. 

1. The Witcher Season 2 (Netflix)

Based on the book series by Polish author Andrej Sapkowski, The Witcher follows the adventures of Geralt of Rivia, the titular Witcher, played by Superman Bruce Cavill, as he hunts and destroys threats in the land of The Continent, while negotiating the complexities of politics and intrigue in the land. At the same time, he also explores his relationship with Princess Ciri, whom he is bound to by destiny, and the Sorceress Yennefer.

Although well-characterised and even adapted into a highly successful trilogy of computer games, the Netflix series has found a new angle to explore Geralt’s character, by focusing not on his later adventures but on the earlier experiences that formed Geralt and the other main characters of the franchise.

2. The Wheel of Time Season 2 (Amazon Prime TV)

The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan has always been considered the Mount Everest of fantasy adaptation, with its popularity, fan devotion, its record-breaking length (14 massive volumes), and its cast of thousands of characters. However, a talented team are now adapting it for Amazon Prime TV, with the help of modern visual technology.

With the world broken and the Dark One rising again, the hunt is on for the prophesied Dragon Reborn, a divisive character who will save the world once more, but is hated and feared because his previous incarnation was responsible for breaking the world in the process of saving it. At the end of Season 1, the Dragon Reborn has been found–now in Season 2, he has to survive the threats that face him, and discover his powers, if he is to stand and face evil and save the world at last. 

3. The Lord of the Rings (Amazon Prime TV)

With the dawn of modern fantasy entertainment heralded in fittingly by the father of modern fantasy series, Amazon Prime TV now adds a new chapter to the fantasy entertainment world with a return to this enduring world that has captured the imagination of millions. With their upcoming new Lord of the Rings series, to be released in 2022, we will return to the world of Middle-Earth–but thousands of years before the events of the movies.

The Lord of the Rings series will focus on the events of the Second Age, when Melkor, the great evil Valar, of whom Sauron was only a servant, dominated Middle Earth, forcing a great alliance of Elves and Men to struggle against him to break his power.
