What’s the point of having a giant screen in your house or a great TV area setup, if you’ve got nothing to watch on it? TVs and TV shows go together hand in glove, so here are some of the most current or exciting sci-fi shows to start your new year with. Some of them will fill you with excitement, and others with hope, but one thing’s for sure–they will not fail to entertain.
An unexpected runaway hit, this new addition to the Star Wars franchise follows Din Djarin, a lone Mandalorian bounty hunter, as he seeks to protect a mysterious Child (of the same race as Jedi Master Yoda) from the forces of the evil Galactic Empire.
Now in Season 2, the Mandalorian has garnered rave reviews and fan excitement for its stunning action scenes, its actors’ gritty performances, and the reappearance of many beloved characters from past movies and series such as Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker’s former Jedi apprentice, and Boba Fett, the implacable bounty hunter from Return of the Jedi.
Discovery is unique as being chronologically both one of the earliest and the most futuristic series of the Star Trek universe. In Seasons 1 and 2, the USS Discovery existed in its original time period, the 23rd century but was transported into the 32nd century in Season 3, further into the future than any Star Trek series had gone before.
After saving all life in the universe from extinction by an unstoppable AI, the Discovery, teleported into the future to ensure the AI cannot be recreated, must now seek to rebuild the Federation they belong to, after discovering it has fallen apart in the wake of a technological disaster known as The Burn.
A film adaptation of a massive novel series, The Expanse looks at what might happen when humans have colonised the entire solar system. Initially panned by critics but becoming critically acclaimed as the story developed, this series has proven prescient as it studies how humanity’s current problems are more likely to perpetuate even as we explore space, and the problems these can cause for us as we expand–and as we come into contact with aliens for the first time.
After being cancelled at the end of Season 3 and saved by Amazon in Season 4, the series ended with humanity encountering alien technology that allows expansion and colonisation of other star systems for the first time. Season 5 premieres in mid-December. What will the next season bring?
